Yunanistan da, Türkiye de, bir süre sonra da diğer Balkan ülkelerinde fotoğraf çekmeye başladığımda amacım gerçekliği tarif etmek değildi. Nesnel doğru ifadesine asla inanmadım.
Balkan halklarına bakarken akıl yürütmeden, yüreğimle kapıldım büyüsüne. Duygularım her zaman olumlu değildi, aslında sık sık dayanılmaz bir şekilde öfkeleniyordum. Birkaç haftalığına eve döndüğümde konuşmak bile istemedim. Aradan bir süre geçince özlemeye başladım ve geri gittim.
Balkanlarda olaylar, çoğunlukla duygularla veya geçmişin idealize edilmesiyle tanımlanır, asla Batı türü bir uslamlamayla değil. Bu patlamalı bölgede yaşam akıl dışılığa yakın alışılmadık bir ritim izler. İçtenlikten nefrete, barıştan savaşa, kutlamadan katliama geçiş, apansız gerçekleşebilir. Burada dönemin sembolleri, harap olmuş evler ve yıkılmış anıtlarla dolu bir görünüm arz eder, yıkılan umutları ve inançsızlığı anlatırlar. Aynı anda hem saf hem de tehlikeli olabilen bu dünya, çatışan kimliklerin dokuduğu alevli bir halıdır.
The Balkan Paradox
Ever since, I started photographing in Greece, in Turkey, and then a bit later in the other Balkan countries, it was not in order to describe reality. I never believed in the arrogance of the objective truth.
I was carried away by the charm of observing the people of the Balkans, in a way that was heartfelt yet void of reason. My emotions were not always positive, in fact they often infuriated me in an unbearable way. I went back home for a few weeks without even wanting to talk about them. After a while, I missed them, and then I returned.
In the Balkans, more often than not, events are defined by emotions or by an idealization of the past and certainly not by Western-type reasoning. Life in this explosive area follows an unusual rhythm that brushes with the irrational. The passing from intimacy to hatred, from peace to war, from celebration to slaughter can occur in an untraceable moment. Here, the symbols of the present are set in a landscape of ruined buildings and toppled monuments. They speak of failed hopes and lacking faith. It is a world at once pure and dangerous, a flaming carpet of conflicting identities.
